Fun Food Facts
Why is KEHO keto? Because >70% of people in the US are obese, and 3/5 have metabolic syndrome (see asterisks). Yes - the average person is sick and will benefit from reducing snacking on the sweet and the super salty stuff, and would gain benefits from going keto (these 13 are from robust peer reviewed scale proper low carb research!). But this is hard; so KEHO made it easy. We did the macro math and make delish foods - so swap out a sweet snack today. Small changes add up to big ones. Make a positive change.
Which would you pack for a lunch box? Both are fruit! Per gram apples pack ten times the sugar of avocados. And for all the talk of apples being high fiber, avocados double it with a third of the suga! Why don't we know this? Possibly because you can't make a high fiber claim for products that are also high fat - like KEHO!
Whaaattt!! Bell peppers to jalapeños are actually berries!!
The fruit is the reproductive part growing from the plant - and the berry is a simple fruit with seeds and pulp produced from the ovary of a single flower. Typically the seeds are in the fleshy interior of the ovary - but peppers are an exception - with the seeds surrounded by air.
Mushrooms are their own kingdom of fungi.
Fungi don't make their own food (like plants), and they reproduce differently.
Plants use light to photosynthesize whereas mushrooms use enzymes to metabolize non-living organic matter, like dead plants - more like animals!
Plus they reproduce using asexual spores not seeds from male/female fusion.
How can the 8g be a different %DV (Daily Value)? Coz the proteins are not the same! The plant-based one is lower as it doesn't have all the essential amino acids. Our bodies can't make them so we have to get them from food, either from one animal source or a mix of plant sources. Vast majority do this easily in a day. Do you check the %DV? Which do you choose?
Which would you choose? Sulfites are used as food preservatives, often to prevent browning in veggies. These only need to be labelled if they are more than 10ppm in the final product or exceeding this level in an individual ingredient - so KEHO wouldn't need to label - but we choose to still go sulfite free, for our natural sun-dried tomatoes and coconut chips!
Did you know freeze-dried veggies retain almost all the nutrients of fresh? And the drying stops the antioxidant degradation. Most of fresh veggies is water, so the same weight of freeze dried mushrooms has 13x the nutrient density of fresh mushrooms. Given we're not shipping water this makes freeze drying super eco friendly too!
Human essential nutrients are water, 9 amino acids, 2 fatty acids, 15 vitamins, 4 minerals, 7 trace minerals, 3 electrolytes and ultratrace minerals - not a single carb. Energy can come from protein and fats thanks to gluconeogenesis and ketogenesis. In practice (unless carnivore) it's hard to eliminate carbs - so have low carb plants full of vitamins and minerals ;)
Diabetes is the most expensive chronic condition in the US. Insulin costs increased roughly 8x over the last two decades! It costs $5.7k per person per year. For type 2 diabetecs, Virta Health has shown > 90% reduced or eliminated insulin while improved their HbA1c. Oh and lost versus gained weight, versus the control group. This is food as medicine!
